The scope is a Dino-lite Edge model I bought several years ago, which allegedly has 50-220x full optical zoom and various other features so was fairly pricey. I've never looked at a stylus under a microscope so I probably don't know what I'm doing. Since I had the USB scope out, I decided I'd try to see if there's wear on the diamond. Alcohol-soaked artist brush finally got it clean, and it's playing fine now. Anyway, there was something sticky holding the fuzz in place no idea what. The diamond must have poked through the fuzz just enough to get slightly into the groove and sort of play, and maybe that explains the 'distant AM radio' sound I got. With the aid of a USB microscope, it turns out there was a tiny ball of 'fuzz' wrapped around and covering the diamond, and it wouldn't completely dislodge with a dry brushing. I'm a little embarrassed to admit what the problem was. The photo below shows where everything is set today, and I'm fairly sure nothing has moved from its previously working state.Дoes anything in the tonearm balance/weighting/skating mechanism drift or degrade over time and you should expect to have to recalibrate it every so often? Doesn't seem like it should drift since most or all the mechanism is direct-connection of weights and pivots, with calibration marks, but maybe I'm missing something. Short of tearing everything down and starting over from scratch with cartridge re-install and tonearm re-balance etc, I'm not sure of next steps. The turntable runs through a Pro-ject Phono Box II (confirmed that isn't the problem) and the cartridge (Denon DL-160) is fairly old but doesn't have that many hours on it. Since I don't know what's wrong, I didn't let it play very long, maybe 30 seconds. When I played an LP, it sounded like a distant AM station played through a clock radio-static/scratchy and indistinct but vague hints of the actual music in the background. It worked fine when I last disconnected it, but something is wrong now.

When I re-assembled things, I left the turntable in storage (in a climate-controlled bedroom, on a shelf and hasn't been moved since then). A couple years back, while doing some home remodeling, I had to tear down my hifi rig and store it in another room.
